Discord Not Picking Up Mic – Complete Guide

Discord is now the number 1 tool in video game communication. Most of the time, Discord works quite well. However, recently there has been a glitch where users have been experiencing issues on the mic. The audio was not getting picked up by Discord but you can hear what the other person in the call is saying. This might not be necessarily a problem with the mic as well.

This problem does not have a guaranteed solution that works for all. In this article, we will be listing out some methods that you could try to fix this issue.

Method 1: Sign out of Discord

  • To sign out from the Windows version of Discord, tap on the User Settings icon from the bottom-left corner.
  • Confirm the Log Out option.
  • Move down and then click Log Out then again hit the LogOut button to confirm. You might have to repeat this a few times to log out properly..
  • After logging out, enter your details and try logging in. If the issue persists, follow the next solution.

Method 2: Run Discord as an Administrator

Sometimes, Discord might not have the necessary permission to transmit data. Therefore, simply right-click on the Discord App and choose the run as administrator option.

Method 3: Changing the Automatic Input Sensitivity settings

Sometimes, disabling Automatic Input Sensitivity has been known to cause such issues with the mic.

  • Select the user settings option from the bottom-left corner in Discord.
  • Tap on Voice & Audio
  • Head down to Input Sensitivity setting and enable the “Automatically determine input sensitivity” option. Try speaking and see if the bar is green.
  • If the bar is green, uncheck the toggle and keep the manual slider in the middle.

Method 4: Choosing the correct microphone under Input Device

In devices with built-in microphones, there might be a conflict between different input devices. As a  result, it is necessary to specify the microphone to be used.

  • Select the user settings option from the bottom-left corner in Discord.
  • Tap on Voice & Audio
  • In the dropdown box under Input Settings, choose the microphone that you are using.
  • Also, ensure that the Input Volume is at the maximum.

Method 5: Disable the Exclusive Mode 

Certain settings in the exclusive mode might cut off the Audio in Discord.

  • Right-click the sound/volume button from the bottom-right corner and choose Recording Devices
  • Now, choose the microphone you are using and tap on Properties
  • Click on the Advanced tab and uncheck the checkboxes under Exclusive Mode. Finally, hit the apply button.
  • Restart the pc and see if the issue is gone.

Method 6: Altering Voice Settings

This is probably the solution that will be most helpful to the users. It has the best success rate.

  • Choose the user settings option from the bottom-left corner in Discord
  • From App Settings, Tap on Voice & Audio.
  • Hit the Reset Voice Settings option.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Wear the headsets and see if the problem is solved.

Method 7: Changing the Input Mode

The problem with this method is that you need to hold a button all the time while talking.

  • Head to the user settings and click on Voice & Audio.
  • From the Input Mode option, checkmark Push to Talk
  • Now assign a key in the Record Keybind.
  • Finally, hit the Stop Recording option.

Method 8: Adjusting Privacy Settings

A new Windows update has caused some changed in the privacy settings which might have affected  the mic in Discord

  • Press the Windows key, enter the word Privacy Settings and from the results, tap on Privacy Settings
  • In the left pane, head down and tap on Microphone.
  • From the right pane, enable the option called “Apps to access your microphone“.
  • Next, head down and see if the Microphone permission for Discord is enabled. If you can’t find Discord in there, then search for Win32WebViewHost
  • Finally, restart the system and see if there are any changes.

Method 9: Disabling QoS on Discord

  • Start Discord and tap on “User Settings”.
  • From the User settings, hit on the “Voice and Video” option in the left pane.
  • Now, deselect the option “Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority”

Method 10: Disabling Advanced Voice Activity Option

  • Head to settings and choose Voice & Video.
  • Ensure that the “Advanced Voice Activity” option is switched off.
  • Finally, restart Discord

Method 11: Trying different audio jacks

Sometimes, the issue might be with the audio jacks. Therefore, we recommend that you connect the microphone to a different audio jack and see if it is working. That is, if you are using the front jacks,  use the rear jacks.

Method 12: Installing Realtek Microphone drivers

If none of the above options are working, you can try installing Realtek drivers as a last-resort  option

  • Head to this website to download the driver-Link
  • After the download is complete, run the file and install it.
  • Restart the pc to finish the installation.
  • Open the Run dialog box and type in devmgmt.ms and hit enter key to check whether the drivers are installed correctly.
  • Double Tap on the sound and video controllers and see if you can find Realtek HD drivers listed.

To enable the installed drivers, right-click the speaker icon in the tray and choose Sounds. Tap on the Recording menu and right-click the Realtek Audio Device option. Choose Enable and then hit the apply button.
