What is the Difference Between Read Receipts and Delivery Receipts?

First, you need to understand what a delivery receipt is. Well, a delivery receipt is an automatically generated receipt that is generated when your email is delivered to the inbox of the receiver.

A delivery receipt does not guarantee that the receiver has read your email. It just tells me that the email has been sent successfully. On the contrary, the read receipt offers clear insight when your receiver has read and opened the email.

How to Request a Read Receipt in Outlook?

Well, it depends from provider to provider. Outlook offers this service; you can always turn on the read receipt for your convenience.

1. On a PC

If you are using a PC, here is the step-by-step instruction to activate read receipts for Outlook-

    1. First, open the “File” tab.
    2. From here, click on options and navigate to “Mail.”
    3. Now, from the expanded menu, navigate to “Tracking”. From here, tick off the checkbox beside “Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message.”
    4. Finally, click “OK” to save the changes.

2. On a Mac

Mac devices are different in the case of Outlook read receipt availability. Only a few Mac devices have Outlook read receipt feature, which is mainly restricted in other devices. So, first, check if your Mac device supports Outlook read receipts. You can also get access to read receipts on Mac devices if you are using a Microsoft 365 work or school account or a Microsoft Server account,

In the case of Outlook read receipts, Mac users need to turn it on while composing a new email to activate the receipt.

3. On the Web

    1. First access the Outlook website from the internet browser.
    2. Next, click on the Settings Icon located at the right corner of the top bar.

    4. From the side panel. Select Message Handling and expand it
    5. Now, in the new tab, please scroll down the left panel to find Read Receipts to expand it.
    6. Under this section, click on Always Send a Response to turn it on.
    7. Finally, click on Save to save your changes.

How to Request a Read Receipt in Outlook?

1. For a Single Email (For PC, Mac and web)

Many users do not want to turn on the read receipt feature for all their emails in Outlook. But, if you want to know the status of a particular email, you can turn on read receipt for a single email.

Here is how to do this-

  1. First, open the Outlook app on your device and access the web version of Outlook from the browser.
  2. Now, click on the New Email Icon under the File tab to compose an email and turn on the receipt for that particular email.
  3. In this new window, check for the Options tab, located at the fourth position from the left at the upper section of the window. Click on it to expand it.
  4. From here, locate Request a Delivery Receipt and tick the check box.
  5. Now proceed to compose the email and send it as usual. You will receive a read receipt for this particular email in the future.

2. For All Emails, You Sent (For PC, Mac and web)

If you want to turn on the receipt for all your emails, you can do that. It often helps a lot. Here is the step-by-step guide-

  1. Open the Outlook app or access its web version from your browser.
  2. Next, click on the File tab that is located at the top left corner and expand it.
  3. From the pop-up sidebar, locate Options and click on it.
  4. From here, select Mail, located on the left sidebar.
  5. From here, scroll down and locate Tracking. Click on it to expand it.
  6. Under this section, tick off the box beside the Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message.
  7. Now, click on “ok” to save your changes.
