Whether it is a TWS earbuds or large over-the-ear headphones, wireless headphones are enjoying their market dominance at the moment. There are several options for decent wireless headphones both from big and established companies as well as small players. For the small companies to compete with big companies, they have to integrate a useful and unique feature such as Active Noise Cancelling but keeping the price well below the flagship range. This is exactly what happened in case of the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones. SuperEQ is a sub-brand of OneOdio (if you are not familiar with them, then they make decent headphones for professionals, studio, DJ market). The SuperEQ S1 is a decent pair of wireless headphones with good music, thumping bass, an impressive ANC and the best thing is they are affordable.
This is the review of the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones. We are writing this review after properly testing the headphones, checking out all its features and also testing the battery playback and charging times. Continue reading the rest of the article to the find out our impressions.
Let us begin the review by taking a look at the contents of the package. First thing we have is the headphonesitself. There is an easy to assemble stand in the package to easily mount the headphones. Next, we have a bunch of paper work with user guide, warning guide and an FAQ guide.
Exploring further, we get an AUX cable (3.5mm Audio Cable), a micro-USB charging cable and also an airplane adapter. Finally, there is an easy carry pouch.
The design of the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones is just like any other wireless headphone in the market with an over-the-ear style. It has large earcups with soft cushion that are made up of memory foam. The headband is of decent width with good cushion.
We have the black and red color option but there is also a white and red combination as well. Note that the pricing of the headphones vary between black and white options.
The part of the headband that makes contact with out head has a rubber feel and finish. We feel that overtime, this part will get dirty and sticky. So, regularly clean them.
There are a couple of decals on the headband that says “Be Young” and “Be Free”. Even though this is the tagline of SuperEQ, it makes them look cheap.
The right earcup is the busiest of the two with all the buttons, ports and controls. First, we have the three main buttons with clear indentations. The top most button (with two dots) can increase the volume (with one click) and play next track (press and hold for 2s). The next button is the main power button. When the headphones are off, press and holdthis button for 2s to turn on the headphones.
To turn off the headphones, press and hold the power button for 3s. This button is also the main pairing button. Turn off the headphones and press and hold the main power button for 5s.
The headphone provides audio feedback when they are powered on or off, enter pairing mode, turn on or off the ANC, reach maximum or minimum volume etc.
During music playback, the center button can play or pause the music. You can also answer, hang up phone calls. The third button (with one dot) is similar to the first button. You can decrease the volume (with one click) and play previous track (press and hold for 2s). Next to these three buttons, we have the indicator LED.
Then we have the ANC button. We will discuss more about the ANC button in a dedicated Active Noise Cancelling section. Right next to the ANC button, there is a 3.5mm audio jack to use the headphones with wired connection. Then we have the micro-USB charging port. Finally, we have the main microphone for making calls.
Apart from these buttons and ports, there are two additional microphones, one each on the either earcup on the top. These microphones are used by the ANC engine to capture the ambient noise.
Pairing the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones is very easy. Once paired, you can start listening to music, answer calls and enjoy ANC feature. With ANC turned OFF, the music quality is very good. The low frequencies are punchy with good bass and there is no distortion in the mids and highs even at 80% volume or more.
We tried listening to a wide genre of music from more than a couple of devices (laptops, mobile phones, tablets) and the result is good in all cases. The controls work flawlessly i.e., you can adjust the volume, change between tracks and pause or play the current track on all the devices.
The microphone is also of good quality. We tested it with mobile calls, Skype calls (both audio and video) and the other party never had any problem with our voice. You can use these headphones for long duration either for listening to music or making office calls. The soft cushion on the earcups and headband will not cause any fatigue although we suggest you to give rest to your head and ears every now and then.
The SuperEQ S1 headphones come with micro-USB charging port. We felt that they should have gone with USB-C Port as it is gradually becoming the standard port across all electronic gadgets.
With ANC off, we got more than 40hrs of Bluetooth audio playback at 80% volume. This isvery good considering the claimed playback time is 45hrs. With the headphones completely drained, we charged using the provided micro-USB cable and it took nearly 3hrs to fully charge.
These headphones also support multipoint technology that enables you to pair two devices at the same time.
One of the standout features of the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, is, well, the Active Noise Cancelling or ANC.Active Noise Cancelling is a feature, often found in premium headphones, that cancels the ambient noise from reaching our ears. This feature is very useful if you travel in loud public places or airplanes.
It is very rare to find such premium feature in budget headphones. Coming to the performance of the ANC, we are really impressed with how good it can block the noise. The ANC button can be used to toggle between ANC ON, ANC OFF and Ambient sound ON modes.
When the ANC is ON, the headphones completely block the ambient noise. Press the ANC button to enable ambient sound. In this case, you will be able to hearall the surrounding noise.
There is another mode in which ANC is OFF (can be activated by pressing and holding the ANC button for 2s). In this mode, you can hear some external soundbut not complete ambient noise. This mode is very useful where you don’t want to completely block the surrounding sounds especially when you are crossing the streets, in a public transport system, in a coffee shop etc.
The price of SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones is $55.99. The performance at this price is excellent. The ANC feature is very impressive and to get a similar ANC option from a premium brand, you would have to spend $200 or more. Music is punchy with clean mids and highs. There is no distortion even at high volume.
Overall, we are really impressed with the quality of the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones. Soft cushions on the earcups with memory foam will not cause any fatigue even for long and continuous usage. The music output is very good and the microphone is decent for making calls (phone calls as well as online calls). If you haven’t experienced any ANC before, you will definitely love this feature. The performance of ANC at this price point is just incredible. If you are looking for a decent over-the-ear style wireless headphones with good music, integrated microphone and decent build quality, then the SuperEQ S1 Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones are a very good option. The extra benefit is that you get ANC with this headphone that is not a gimmick but it actually works.
