Bottom Line
The JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter is an excellent roadside companion for your car. It comes in handy during emergency situations where you cannot start your car engine (due to weak or dead battery). It has a massive 88.8Wh battery that you can use to crank large diesel and gasoline engines. Additionally, when you are not using the device to crank engines, you can use this battery bank to charge smartphones and laptops.

Picture this: It is a frigid winter morning, and a thick blanket of snow covers the ground. You are all bundled up, ready to start your day, when you head out to your car – only to find that it won’t start. The bitter cold has zapped the life out of your car’s battery overnight. You’re facing the classic “click-click” sound of a struggling engine, and you know you’re in for a rough start unless you take action.

This is where a jump starter comes into play. With a jump starter tucked away in your trunk, you can easily tackle this unexpected challenge.A jump starter is a portable device used to start a vehicle that has a discharged or weak battery. It provides a temporary boost of power to the vehicle’s battery, allowing the engine to start. Jump starters are particularly useful in situations where a vehicle’s battery has died due to various reasons, such as leaving lights on, extreme weather conditions, or prolonged periods of inactivity.

We recently got our hands on the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter. As the model name suggests, it can supply a peak current of 3500A and a starting current of 1800A.As you will need the jump starter functionality only during emergencies, you can continue using the jump starter as a power bank.

In this review of the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter, we will test all the functionalities of the unit pertaining to the jump starting a car as well asusing the device as a power bank. Continue reading to find out more about the same.

Let us kick things off by taking a look at the contents of the package. First, we have the main Jump Starter unit. We will talk more about the Jump Starter in the next section. Next, we have the main jumper clamps. The cables and the alligator clips of these clamps look solid. Then we have the DC Charging Cable with Barrel Jack on one end and a 12V cigarette lighter adapter on the other end.

JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter Unboxing

Next, we have two USB Cables. One is USB Type-C to Type-C and the other is USB Type-A to Type-C. There is also a user manual in the package with basic information on the jump starter.

Holding the jump starter in hands for the first time, we can feel how well it is made. There is a good heft to the device as it weighs slightly over a kilogram. On the front side (the side with displayfacing us) of the device, we have a big display on the center. It has three 7-Segment LED style digits, four bar battery level indicator, indicator for input or output, and fast charging.

While the display has a battery level indicator, it is very primitive with four LEDs. We feel that a digital read-out of the battery percentage would be nice.

Right to display unit, we have the main power button. Just above the power button, there are a couple of LED indicators. The top red LED indicates any error state while the green LED acts a normal operation indicator.

JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter Design

On the left of the display, you can see the LED control/mode button. Speaking of LEDs, on the left side of the jump starter, you can see two sets of LEDs that put out 400 Lumens.  If we look at theside below the display, we have the main port of the jump starter. It is a standard EC8 Port with a slotted design. This means, you can fit the jump starter cable only the right way.

Next, on the side above the display, we have all the input/output ports. If you remove the flap, you can see three ports: one USB-A port, 12V DC Port, and a USB-C Port. We will talk more about the ratings of these ports in the later sections. Flipping the jump starter to its back side, you can see some important specifications of the device.

That’s enough talk on the design of the device. Let us see how the jump starter performs in real life. The first and important job of the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter is to, well, jump start a car with discharged or dead battery. In order to test this, we looked for a discharged batteryto replace our almost new battery. The local garage had some older batteries that are discharged significantly but not completely dead. We borrowed one for testing the jump starter. After replacing the battery, we tried to start the engine with the discharged battery and as expected, the car didn’t start.

Now the moment of truth. We took the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter and connected the jumper cable to the EC8 Port of the jump starter. Then, we took the positive and negative clamps (the alligator clips) and connected them to the positive and negative terminals of the battery. An important note here: we completely charged the Jump Starter to 100% prior to this test.

After switching on the jump starter, it displayed the current battery voltage, which was around 9V. So, apart from using the jump starter as a jump starter and a power bank, you could use it to check the voltage of the battery. Continuing the test, we then started the car and within 2 seconds, it started the 3.3L V6 engine. Impressive.

JOMGAND Jump Starter Action

What if you have a completely dead battery?Don’t worry. This jump starter has got you covered here as well. In order to simulate a dead battery, we disconnected the battery altogether. Then we connected the jump starter in place of the battery. But before connecting the clamps to the car, you have to take of an important setting.

As the battery is completely dead, normal jump starter action will not work. You have to use the force jump starting method. For this, after turning the jump starter on, you have to press both the power button and the light button and hold them for three seconds. The green light on the display will stay on to indicate “Force Start” mode. Now you can connect the clamps to the car. We now started the car and the result is same; the jump starter could easily start the car in just a couple of seconds even with a completely dead battery.

When you enable the Force Jump Starting method, some of the safety mechanisms of the unit will turn off. So, don’t short the positive and negative clamps of the jump starter.

After performing these two tests back-to-back, the battery level indicator dropped one point but we are not sure about the exact percentage left. Next, we charged the jump starter 100% to check the actual capacity of the battery bank.

The specifications say the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter boasts a 24,000mAH Battery at 3.7V, which translates to 88.8Wh.Does it really have this capacity? After fully charging the jump starter, we used an electronic load to test the capacity of the battery. We set a constant discharge current of 5A at 20V using the USB-C Port to completely discharge the power bank. After repeating the tests for two times, we got the battery capacity around 86Wh, which is slightly less than the advertised value. But this is fine as difference between the claimed and tested values isn’t much.

Apart from using the JOMGAND JQ3500 as a jump starter, we can also use it as a power bank. As you can see from the ports, it comes with a USB-A and USB-C ports. With USB-A, which acts as only an output port, you can draw a maximum of 18W. It supports QC2.0 Fast Charging with outputs of 5V⎓ 3A, 9V ⎓ 2A, and 12V ⎓ 1.5A.

Next, we have the USB-C Port. It is a dual-purpose port i.e.; you can use it as both input (to charge the jump starter) as well as output (to charge smartphones/laptops from jump starter). The USB-C Port supports USB-PD for both input and output up to 100W. It supports 5V ⎓ 3A, 9V ⎓ 3A, 12V ⎓ 3A, 15V ⎓ 3A, and 20V ⎓ 5Afor input as well as output.

JOMGAND Jump Starter Features

We charged the jump starter using a 100W USB-PD Adapter and it took just over 85 minutes to fully charge it. Speaking of charging, there is another way you can charge the JOMGAND JQ 3500 Jump Starter, which is using the 12V DC Port. The package comes with a cigarette lighter adapter with DC plug on the other end. You can connect it to a cigarette lighter port of your car and charge the jump starter. But the maximum power you can draw from this connection is only 60W.So, the charging will be slightly slower.

So, how was the overall performance of the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter? In the multiple teststhat we performed, the device performed very well. It could jump start slightly discharged batteries and even dead batteries and start the car very easily. We could test the jump starter only on a smaller 3.3L V6engine but the specifications claim it could jump start even larger engines (both diesel and gasoline).

Then we used the jump starter as a power bank. Even here, the JOMGAND JQ3500 performed quite well. You can charge two smartphones or a laptop and a smartphone with this device. As the JQ3500 supports up to 100W USB-PD, you can fast charge the devices if they support that feature.

Charging the jump starter was also fine. With a 100W USB-PD Charger, we could top-up the jump starter in less than 90 minutes. Additionally, there is a large flash light on the JOMGAND JQ3500 Jump Starter. This is very useful if you are struck with a dead or discharged battery during evening or night time.

JOMGAND Jump Starter Performance

If you look at the specifications, the operating temperature of the device is -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). So, if you live in an extremely cold climate where the chance of a car battery going flat is very high, then this jump starter can help you in such situations.
