A power bank is a portable battery that can store electrical energy and act as a source of energy to charge other devices such as smartphones, tablets, cameras, and laptops. It is are essential for anyone who uses their devices heavily on the go. They are especially useful for travelers, campers, and people who work long hours away from an outlet. Power banks can also be used to charge multiple devices at the same time, making them a great option for families and groups of friends.
Power banks come in a variety of sizes and capacities, with the most common being between 10,000mAh(milliampere hours) and 20,000mAh. This is enough to charge most smartphones multiple times. Unlike phone power banks, laptop power banks need significantly more juice with a capacity of at least 20,000mAh, ideally over 40,000mAh, for a decent charge boost.
Standard laptops often work with 60-65W, while gaming or high-performance models might require 100W or more. So, it is essential to match the power bank’s output wattage to your laptop’s needs. Also, most laptop power banks offer USB-C with Power Delivery (PD) for fast charging.
Keeping these things in mind, we recently got a chance to test the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh and 20,000mAh Power Banks. The POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Banks, with its large battery capacity, supports multiple top-ups of any typical laptop. However, its maximum power output is only 65W. Coming to the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank, even though it has a lower capacity, it makes up with its 100W charging support.
This is the review of the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank and POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank. We are writing this review after using and testing them for more than a week with all our gadgets (mainly phones, laptops, and earbuds). We will look at the capabilities and performance of these power banks and find out if they can fulfil your needs of a portable source of power.
Let us kick things off by unboxing both the power banks starting with the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh. Opening the package (which by the way, has a thick foam protecting the contents), we first get the user manual. Then we have the main event i.e., the POWRADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank. We will take a closer look at the unit in the next section. We also get a couple of USB cables in the package; one is a USB Type-C to Type-A Cable, while the other is a USB Type-C to Type-C one.
The unboxing experience for the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank is also similar. First, we get a USB Type-C to Type-C Cable and there are no other cables. Then we have the power bank unit itself. There is also a simple user manual in the package.
You don’t get any charging adapters in either of the packages and we did not expect one as even high-end smartphones (where an adapter is an essential part of the smartphone experience) do not include adapters.
Traditionally, when we think of power banks, we usually get an image of a relatively flat device, a tad bit thicker than a typical smartphone. But things are quite different with the POWERADD Pro Power Banks. The size of the 50,000mAh power bank is similar to a typical coke can, at least the girth. Height is slightly less than the coke can.
The top has a display that indicates the remaining battery level of the power bank. It also has all the ports (which we will look in the next section) for connecting different devices and charging the unit as well. The front of the unit has a wide LED strip that acts as a flashlight. There is a flexible handle from the sides so that you can easily carry it with you. The bottom has four tiny rubber feet that helps the device in staying up right.
Coming to the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank, it is slightly smaller than the 50,000mAh model but still is a big unit. It has a boxy shape with all the ports on the top and a 4-LED battery level indicator.
There are no other extra features such as flashlight in this particular model. The front has a “100W” text indicating that it supports 100W charging.
Let us take a closer look at the ports situation of the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank. There are 5 ports in total; 1 × Micro USB, 1 × USB Type-C, 3 × USB Type-A. Of these, the Micro USB port acts as input, USB Type-C ports has dual purpose (input as well as output) while the three USB Type-A ports are output only.
Here is a port-wise voltage and current specifications.
The USB Type-C Port has support for USB PD while the other USB Type-A ports support for QC 3.0. We can use the power button (long press) to turn the flash light on or off. We can also adjust the brightness of the LEDs to three levels.
Coming to the ports and their capabilities of the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank, it has total 3 ports of which one is regular USB Port and the other two are USB-C. Both the USB Type-C Ports can work as inputs and output but the USB Type-A can work only as an output.
Here is a gist of different voltages and currents that all these ports support.
Fast charging wise, the two USB Type-C Ports support PD 3.0, QC.4.0, SCP, and FCP protocols while the USB Type-A Port supports QC 3.0.
So, how did the power banks perform in real-life usage? We tested these power banks with MacBook Pro 14” that supports 96W Fast Charging, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon that supports at least 65W Fast Charging, and a Samsung S23+ that supports 45W Fast Charging.
The POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank has a 185Wh capacity. While it supports USB PD from its USB-C Port, the maximum charge is limited to 65W. We could charge the 14” MacBook Pro (which has a 70Wh battery) from 0 to 50% is just over 30-minutes. And overall, we could fully charge the MacBook Pro two times from the massive 50,000mAh power bank.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a slightly smaller 57Wh battery. Using the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank, we could charge this laptop from 0 to 50% is less than 30-minutes and overall, we could charge 2.7 times. The Samsung S23+ could go all the way to 65% in just over 30-minutes.
With the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank, we can get to almost 70% in just over 40 minutes for the MacBook Pro 14” model. As the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon supports up to 100W fast charging, we could get from 0 to 65% in just over 30 minutes using the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank. Things with the Samsung S23+ are not that different from the previous test as it has a maximum fast charging support of only 45W.
The POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank, which has a digital display, indicates “FAST” when the device supports fast charging. The POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank on the other hand has a much more basic 4-LED battery level indicator.
Surprisingly, the price of both the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh and POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Banks is the same at $69.99. At the time of reviewing these products, the 20,000mAh unit is available for $56.99. There are coupons (worth $20) using which you can get the power banks for even less price. Both the power banks have 2-years as standard.
Overall, we are really impressed with the POWERADD Pro Power Banks. We reviewed two units here; one with a massive 50,000mAh capacity while the other has a normal 20,000mAh capacity. Both the units have multiple ports and support simultaneous charging of multiple devices.
Both power banks support a bunch of fast charging protocols but the main difference (apart from their capacity) is the maximum power that these units can deliver (or take as input for charging them). The POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank supports a maximum of only 65W power while the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank has an impressive 100W power.
If you are looking for a portable power bank with a big capacity to charge your laptop, smartphones, tablets, or earbuds, multiple times, then the POWERADD Pro 50,000mAh Power Bank is a very good choice. It has a decent 65W USB PD input/output. So, you can charge small laptops that support USB PD.
On the other hand, if you are looking for an emergency power source that supports 100W USB PD charging for your laptop, then the POWERADD Pro 20,000mAh Power Bank is a good choice.
